But as they reach higher altitudes, serious problems with aerodynamic stability arise. The rockets used to send satellites into space are heavy objects. According to analysts, any object weighing a ton or more will not be able to float in the sky and maintain aerodynamic stability unless it is powered by an engine or attached to a balloon.
Google's Project Loon initiative aims to provide 3G service to remote parts of the world using balloons floating in the stratosphere. A network of platforms in the stratosphere could offer cheaper and more flexible coverage than satellites, and could be deployed quickly when needed.
