The Dark Face of Digital Surveillance with Smart Meters Turning into Spies

Have you ever imagined smart meters turning into data-collecting agents? Whatever your answer, the smart meter scandal in Sacramento, USA, revealed a situation beyond privacy violation. This scandal strikingly exposes how modern societies are controlled through digital surveillance.

SMUD (Sacramento Municipal Utility District) is a large public utility provider serving about 650,000 homes. However, smart meters caused a major scandal by sharing energy usage data with the police without court permission. This is far more than an ordinary data leak; it is a state-supported, systematic, and discriminatory surveillance operation. Since smart meters have become digital spies entering our homes, asking whether dark plans exist has become a necessity.

Our Homes Have Turned into Digital Police Stations

SMUD’s meters record energy consumption in 15-minute intervals. This data creates detailed profiles, from our sleep patterns to who is at home. In other words, the risk of our homes turning into digital police stations through energy consumption is not a technological advancement but a systematic destruction of privacy.

Is such detailed data really collected only for energy management? Or are there other purposes?

The Rule of Law Is Being Overturned

Sharing data with the police without court permission violates the California Constitution. However, it raises questions about how ineffective laws are against technological surveillance. More than 33,000 customers were surveilled simply for being labeled “suspicious” based on their postal codes. This proves that arbitrary surveillance policies, not the rule of law, prevail.

Given legal gaps and ethical concerns, is the spread of similar practices inevitable? Isn’t it time to question the situation in our own country?

The New Racism of Algorithms

SMUD analysts combined electricity consumption data with ethnic origins to target specific homes. The police surveillance of addresses labeled “Asian” shows how technology turns into a racist oppression tool. This is not only part of California’s system but also a component of global digital surveillance systems.

An Asian immigrant using medical devices was accused of illegal substance production due to high energy consumption. Another person was forcibly removed from their home while mining cryptocurrency. These examples are vivid proofs of how digital surveillance victimizes innocent people. We must consider how ethnic, religious, or regional differences can lead to algorithmic discrimination. This is a fundamental issue of social justice.

The Collapse of Digital Privacy: The Deception of Privacy Policies

SMUD’s privacy policy neutralizes customers’ consent rights. Whether you agree to the text hidden in the website’s footer or not, the system already assumes your acceptance. This is a dangerous example of the “you are deemed to have accepted” logic in the digital world. Similar policies are widespread in many countries.

So, how will individuals’ digital rights and privacy be protected? This is a struggle for technical and fair policies.

Algorithmic Discrimination: The New Face of Digital Inequality

In the digital age, algorithmic discrimination reflects historical, cultural, and economic power relations digitally. If companies like Amazon exclude women in hiring algorithms or credit scores are linked to ethnicity, these are different faces of the same problems.

Many countries lack comprehensive laws regulating algorithmic decision-making processes; there are many legal gaps. Although Turkey’s KVKK protects personal data, it is insufficient to prevent algorithmic discrimination. Compared to the EU’s GDPR regulations, serious deficiencies in digital rights create a suitable ground for the spread of digital surveillance and discrimination. This situation also risks our national security.

The Importance of Conscious Awareness in the Age of Digital Surveillance

Digital surveillance is not just a technological issue; it is a systematic attack on human dignity, freedom, and justice. The SMUD scandal is not just an illegal practice of a company; it is part of global and local digital surveillance architectures supported by complex and secret plans. Unfortunately, since the truth is often labeled as “wild conspiracy theory,” a large part of society remains unaware.

However, conscious awareness is the key to breaking dark plans. Don’t just read this article; ask politicians, question, discuss, and take action. Because in the age of digital surveillance, silence means surrendering our future.
